Flavors Far-Flung, Ep. 7

Greetings, readers of Flavors Far-flung. My name is Detective Jol Solas of the Intergalactic Police Force. I’m in charge of the search for the missing Civret food tourist, Faelan Wo.

Since I’m not such a terrible cook myself, the editor of Flavors Far-flung Deks Skets asked me if I’d fill in for Faelan Wo while I look into her disappearance. It took a bit of convincing, but an all-expenses-paid second honeymoon to Tuscano had my wife sold. How could I say no?

Besides, it’ll give me a chance to update the most interested segment of the public as to the investigation. It won’t be much, mind you, as it’s an ongoing investigation, and I wouldn’t want to tip off the criminals responsible for Faelan’s disappearance, but I’ll let you know what I can.

Bear with me–I may know how to cook and hunt down criminals, but writing’s not my forte.

As of this writing, we are chasing down several promising leads. The scene of her last known location yielded a plethora of clues. The captain of the freighter she was on apparently lost both possession of that ship and the clothes off his back in a game of chance, and decided to fight rather than let it go. He did not survive the altercation. From all accounts, Faelan, on the other hand, gave as good as she got! But don’t worry, we have no reason to believe she’s not still alive. There wasn’t nearly enough Civret blood for that.

I can’t say more than that for now, I’m afraid. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyways: If anyone has any information that might be of use to the investigation, please reach out via the holotab at the bottom of this periodical.

Now for the promised recipe.

Tennem Rough Grains

I come from the Tennem Sector of Melkaris, so this isn’t going to be quite as fancy as the stuff you’re probably used to, but I promise it’s gonna be a guilty little pleasure meal. We weren’t as poor as some, but enough so that a lot of foods came from the dobo on the corner that only stocked the dregs of whatever the freighters brought in, after the richer sectors got all the fresh food. But we made do. My dad made this dish plenty of times when Mom was going to be late getting home. It’s good comfort food made with last night’s leftovers.

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes dehydrated cream soup (2 14 ounce cans of condensed cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soup)
  • 6 cups cooked rough grains (white or brown rice)
  • 1 lb minced porcine meat, cooked (ground beef or pork)
  • assorted frozen vegetables (frozen peas and corn works well)
  • 1-2 cups grated cheese

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Mix soup, grains, meat, vegetables, and half of the cheese together and press into a 9×13 pan.
  3. Sprinkle with the rest of the cheese.
  4. Bake until cheese is toasted, about 30 minutes.
